Google Business Profile Video Verification: The Complete Walkthrough

Google wants a video before it verifies your Business Profile — and most owners fail the first attempt. Exactly what to show, in what order, what documents to have ready, and the mistakes that get profiles suspended. Free hands-on help included.

Why Google makes you do this

Fake listings are a plague on Google Maps — spam profiles, lead-reseller fronts, businesses that don't exist squatting on real searches. Video verification is Google's answer: prove you're a real business, at a real location, run by you. It's annoying, but it's also protecting the map you're trying to rank on — and once you understand what Google is actually checking for, passing is straightforward.

Google is verifying three things in one continuous video: your location is real, your business operates there, and you personally have authority over it. Every clip you film should be feeding one of those three. Miss one of the three, and you get the dreaded 'we couldn't verify your business' email and start over — or worse, a suspension that takes weeks to appeal.

Before you hit record: the checklist

Video verification happens in the app, on your phone — you cannot do this from a desktop, and you cannot upload a pre-recorded video. It's one continuous take through the Google Maps app (or Google Business Profile prompt) using your phone's camera, so have everything staged before you start.

Gather these first. Proof of location: you'll walk outside and film the street sign at your corner and your home or business address — the numbers on the building or mailbox. Proof of operations: if you work from a commercial location, your store signage; if you're a service business, your work vehicle — with your tools and equipment visible in or on it, wrapped or not. Proof of authority: your business paperwork — DBA filing, LLC articles, or business license if you have one (any of these helps; bring what exists), plus your government ID and a business card. None of it needs to be framed on a wall; it needs to be in your hand, legible on camera.

The walkthrough: what to film, in order

Start outside. Film the street sign, then pan to your building and walk to the address — show the numbers clearly. If it's a storefront, capture your signage on the way in. If you run the business from home (completely fine for service-area businesses — your address stays hidden from the public), the street sign and house number do this job.

Then prove the operation. Walk to your vehicle and show it, then open it up and show your tools and equipment — the things you actually work with. A ladder rack, gauges, a welder, detailing rig, mowers: whatever your trade carries. This is the strongest 'real business' signal a service company can give, so don't rush it.

Finish with authority. On camera, show your paperwork — the DBA, LLC documents, or business license — then your ID (matching the name on the profile or paperwork) and your business card. If you have a commercial space, unlocking the door or accessing something only an owner could reach (the register, the office, the back room) reinforces it further. Then stop recording and submit. Most verifications come back within a few days; some clear in hours.

Where people fail

The common failures are all preventable: filming from a desktop or trying to upload an edited video (instant rejection — it must be live, continuous, in the app on your phone), skipping the street context so Google can't place the location, a business name on the profile that doesn't match any paperwork or signage shown, filming a P.O. box or virtual office as if it were a real location (this earns suspensions, not just rejections), and rushing past the equipment so nothing actually proves a working business.

One more that catches people: attempting verification with a profile that already violates guidelines — keyword-stuffed business name, wrong categories, a location that isn't staffed. Verification puts human eyes on your profile, so it's exactly the wrong moment to have obvious problems. Clean the profile first, verify second.
